Protoceratops Skull
Protoceratops Skull
Species: Protoceratops andrewsi – a compact, horned dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous, notable for its iconic frill, robust build, and role as a key transitional form in ceratopsian evolution. This reconstruction captures the distinctive anatomy of this well-known Mongolian herbivore.
Length: Available in 150–200 cm (5–6.6 ft) replicas.
Time Period: Late Cretaceous (~75–71 million years ago)
Discovery Location: Modeled after specimens recovered from the Djadokhta Formation of Mongolia’s Gobi Desert – one of the richest fossil sites for ceratopsians and other Cretaceous fauna. Protoceratops was first discovered during the Central Asiatic Expeditions of the 1920s, and it remains one of the most thoroughly studied dinosaurs from the region.
Skeleton: Expertly sculpted and crafted in a high-quality resin. Reinforced with an internal steel armature, this reconstruction faithfully reflects the strong, quadrupedal anatomy of Protoceratops. Notable features include its broad frill, deep beaked snout, sturdy limbs, and short tail. The skeletal texture replicates the weathering and detail of original fossil bone, and the body proportions are based on composite reconstructions from multiple complete specimens.
Anatomical Notes: Though lacking the large horns of its later relatives like Triceratops, Protoceratops exhibits many key ceratopsian traits. It was a low-browsing herbivore with a powerful bite and a prominent frill, possibly used for display, species recognition, or defense. This reconstruction captures the dinosaur’s compact power and evolutionary significance.
Display: Includes a custom black metal stand, designed to support the skeleton in a stable, naturalistic quadrupedal stance. The pose reflects typical behavior, with subtle curvature through the spine and lifelike limb positioning.
Please note: All reconstructions are made to order. Current lead time is 4-6 weeks on skulls of this size though this may vary depending on workshop schedule. Smaller individual elements such as skulls or isolated bones may ship sooner. Please reach out via chat for lead time confirmation or to discuss display needs.
