Shri rapax. This extraordinary theropod from the Late Cretaceous period
The Worlds FIrst Shri Rapax
We are excited to unveil the first complete skeletal reconstruction of Shri rapax. This extraordinary theropod from the Late Cretaceous period was discovered in Mongolia’s Djadokhta Formation. When the dinosaur was first described, we immediately set to work reconstructing this enigmatic predator, as sadly, the history of the specimen is complicated. It was illegally exported and passed through private collections. Most recently, the skull and the first four cervical vertebrae (C1–C4) have been lost. Cases like this highlight the importance of protecting fossils from illegal trade and careless loss, ensuring that these irreplaceable pieces of natural history remain available for study by both scientists and the public. Our reconstruction captures the key anatomical features that make Shri rapax so remarkable: heavily pneumatized vertebrae that lightened the skeleton, massive and formidable manual claws, and unusually reinforced finger digits. This distinction demonstrates niche partitioning.
